February 9th marks several important moments in scientific history. One of the most recent occurred on February 9th, 1996, when Sigurd Hoffman and his team discovered element 112. Hoffman (February 15th, 1944- June 17th, 2022), Peter Armbruster (July 25th, 1931- June 26th, 2024) and Gottfried Münzenberg (March 17, 1940–January 2, 2024) were German scientist working at the GSI Helmholtz Center for Heavy Ion Research in Darmstadt, Germany. Their initial experiment produced only a single atom of the new element, and the discovery was officially recognized by the International Union of Pure and Applied Chemistry in 2009.

To this day, only a few atoms of element 112 have every been created. In 2009, the name Copernicium was proposed in honor of Nicolaus Copernicus, and it became official in February 2010.
