The First U.S. Brain Operation

On February 21st, 1902, Dr. Harvey Cushing performed the first documented brain operation in the United States. Although the world’s earliest successful brain surgery had been carried out in 1879 by Dr. William Macewen in Scotland, Cushing’s procedure marked a milestone in American neurosurgery.

His patient, known as Mary D., underwent an exploratory frontoparietotemporal craniotomy on the left hemisphere. During the operation, Dr. Cushing identified significant hydrocephalus, a finding that helped shape early neurosurgical understanding and cemented his legacy as a pioneer in the field
